ျမန္မာ စကားပံုမ်ား(Myanmar Proverb)

Adjust burden to strength, like arrow to bow.

တန္ႏွင့္အားကို ေလးႏွင့္ျမွားကဲ့သုိ႔ ညီေအာင္လုပ္ပါ။

Although cowardly be slow to run.

မရဲေသာ္လည္း ေျပးခဲေစ။

The anger of the prudent never shows.

ပညာရွိအမ်က္ အျပင္မထြက္။

Arrows all gone before the battle begins.

စစ္မေရာက္ခင္ ျမွားကုန္။

As the doe gives birth to a fawn the tiger eats it.

သမင္ေမြးရင္း က်ားစားရင္း။



As to eating it, will it is covered with grit; but as to throwing it away, well, it is rich and luscious.

စားရမွာလည္း သဲတရွပ္ရွပ္၊ လႊင့္ပစ္ရမွာကလည္း အဆီနဲ႔ တ၀င္း၀င္း။

As you are fated to eat honey, bees swarm in your beard.

စားရကံၾကံဳေတာ့ မုတ္ဆိိတ္ပ်ားစြဲ။

Ask when you don't know, wash when you're dirty.

မသိလွ်င္ေမး၊ မစင္လွ်င္ေဆး။

At the sight of fresh fish away goes the roast.

ငါးစိမ္းျမင္၊ ငါးကင္ပစ္။

Bad children? Blame the parents.

သားသမီးမေကာင္း မိဘေခါင္း။

The black elephant dare not look at the royal white elephant's face.

ဆင္ျဖဴမ်က္ႏွာ ဆင္မည္း မၾကည့္၀ံ့။

Being afraid of the tiger he takes refuge with the lork Spirit, but the lord Spirit is worse than the tiger.

က်ားေၾကာက္လို႔ ရုွင္ႀကီးကိုး၊ ရွင္ႀကီး က်ားထက္ဆိုး။

The bigger the tiger, the bigger the pug-marks.

က်ားႀကီးေတ့ာ ေျခရာႀကီး။

A blind fowl came upon the rice-pot .

ၾကက္ကန္း ဆန္အိုးတိုး။

The blind man is not afraid of ghosts.

မ်က္ကန္းတစ္ေဆမေၾကာက္။

The care of one daughter equals that of a thousand cattle.

သမီးတစ္ေကာင္ ႏြားတစ္ေထာင္။

The cat jumps with joy when the forest is on fire.

ေတာမီးေလာင္ ေတာေၾကာင္ လက္ခေမာင္းခတ္။

Cheeks shinning because of gold earrings.

ေရႊနားကပ္ေရာင္ေၾကာင့္ ပါးေျပာင္။

Clear water cannot be obtained from a well that has just been dug.

ခု ေရတြင္းတူး၊ ခု ေရၾကည္ေသာက္၍ မရ။

Day will not break for a hen's cackle; it will break only for a cock's crow.

ၾကက္မတြန္၍ မိုးမလင္း၊ ၾကက္ဖတြန္မွ မိုးလင္းသည္။

Desire for haste is delay

အရင္လို အေႏွးျဖစ္။

Discard only bad baskets and punnets, not bad sons and daughters.

ေတာင္းစုတ္ ပလံုးစုတ္သာ ပစ္႐ုိးထံုးစံ ရွိသည္။ သားဆိုးသမီးဆိုးကို ပစ္႐ုိးထံုးစံမရွိ။

Do not spare a bullock or a wife.

မယားနဲ႔ႏြား မသနားနဲ႔။

Do not tread on a heap of thorns because you have faith in you karma.

ကံယံုု၍ ဆူးပံုမနင္းနဲ႔။

Eat a section of garlic; you smell of garlic. Eat two sections; you smell the same.

တစ္တက္စားလည္း ၾကက္သြန္၊ ႏွစ္တက္စားလည္းၾကက္သြန္။

Eczema comes on the teprous place.

ႏူရာ ၀ဲစြဲ။

An ember about to blaze glows brightly.

ေတာက္မည့္မီးခဲ တရဲရဲ။

Empty pockets, empty promises.

ေငြမရွိ စကားမတည္။

An error may go on for ever, but it can be set right in a moment.

ပ်က္အစဥ္ ျပင္ခဏ။

Even if you do not love him (her), hold your breath and kiss him (her), even if yor do not kiss him (her), heave a sigh.

မခ်စ္ေသာ္လည္း ေအာင့္ကာနမ္း၊ နမ္းေသာ္လည္း ပင့္သက္႐ွဴ။

Falling face downwards in the front of the tiger.

က်ားေရွ႕ ေမွာက္ရက္လဲ။

ျခင္းၾကားနဲ႔ ေရသယ္။

အကြပ္မရွိၾကမ္း ပရမ္းပတာ။

Fondle a dog and it will lick your face.

ေခြးကေလး အေရာ၀င္ေတာ့ ပါးလ်က္ နားလ်က္။

The future price will be fixed in the future; sell it at the current price.

ေနာင္ခါလာ ေနာင္ခါေစ်း။

Going to plough and forgetting the catte.

လယ္ထြန္သြား ႏြားေမ့။

A good beginning ensures a satisfactory ending.

အစေကာင္းမွ အေႏွာင္းေသခ်ာ။

A good tree can lodge ten thousand birds.

သစ္တစ္ပင္ေကာင္း ငွက္တစ္ေသာင္းနားႏိုင္။

Grass depends on the island, the island on the grass.

ကြၽန္းကိုင္းမွီ ကိုင္းကြၽန္းမွီ။

Great desire obtains little.

အလိုႀကီးက အရနည္း။

Guests only come to a happy house.

အိမ္သာလုိ႔ ဧည့္လာ။

He asked for

bones because he wants flesh.

အသားလုိလို႔ အ႐ုိးေတာင္း။

He breathes through someone else's nose.

သူမ်ားႏွာေခါင္းေပါက္နဲ႔ အသက္႐ႈ။

He calls her aunt only when her cucumber fruits.

ဘူးသီးသီးလို႔ အရီးေတာ္။

He climbs up the pole of the morquee to show his alms-giving.

အလွဴ႕ရွင္မွန္းသိေအာင္ မ႑ပ္တိုင္တက္ျပ။

He does not catch the monitor lizard and he has lost his chopper.

ဖြတ္မရ ဓားမဆုံး။

He dropped a fish-hook whenever the fish sent up bubbles (expecting to catch it).

ငါးပြက္ရာ ငါးစာခ်။

He leans on a white elephant and sucks sugar-cane.

ဆင္ျဖဴေတာ္မွီ၍ ၾကံစုပ္။

He lives in the bushes but

his spirits is in the heavens.

လူေနခ်ဳံၾကား စိတ္ေနဘံုဖ်ား။

He may be poor, however intelligent he may be, if he has no karma.

ကံမရွိ ဥာဏ္ရွိတိုင္းမြဲ။

He praises the pickling of his own fish.

ကိုယ့္ငါးခ်ဥ္ ကိုယ္ခ်ဥ္။

He rides without knowing whether it's a stallion or mare.

ကိုယ္စီးတဲ့ျမင္း အထီးမွန္းအမမွန္း မသိ။

He tries to establish relationship with a person only when the person has gold.

ေရႊရွိမွ အမ်ဳိးေတာ္။

He was all right when he was sitting; only when he got up did I realize he was lame.

ထိုင္ေနေတာ့ အေကာင္းသား၊ ထသြားမွ အကိ်ဳးမွန္းသိ။

He who talks isn't strong; he who's

strong doesn't talk.

လူေျပာမသန္၊ လူသန္မေျပာ။

He would like to ride a difficult buffalo but hasn't enough courage.

မရဲဘဲ ကြၽဲျပဲစီးခ်င္။

His mouth say; "Buddha Buddha, " but his hand acts contrariwise.

ပါးစပ္က ဘုရား ဘုရား၊ လက္က ကားယား ကားယား။

Husband and wife are like tongue and teeth.

လင္နဲ႔မယား လွ်ာနဲ႔သြား။

I have no money to pay the debt and no land abscond to.

ေပးစရာ ေငြမရွိ၊ ေျပးစရာ ေျမမရွိ။

If a needle can pierce it don't chop with an axe.

အပ္ျဖင့္ ထြင္း၍ရလွ်င္၊ ပုဆိန္ျဖင့္ မခုတ္ရ။

If the beginning is good, the end must be perfect.

အစေကာင္းလွ်င္ အေႏွာင္းေသခ်ာမည္။

If the cattle are scattered the tiger seizes him.

ႏြားကြဲလွ်င္ က်ားဆြဲမည္။

If the fire is greater the fire wins; if the water is greater the water wins.

မီးမ်ား မီးႏိုင္၊ ေရမ်ား ေရႏိုင္။

If the thorn falls the leaf is pierced; if the leaf falls the leaf is pierced.

ဆူးေပၚဖက္က်လွ်င္ ဖက္ေပါက္သည္။ ဖက္ေပၚဆူးက်လွ်င္ ဖက္ေပါက္သည္။

If there is a question, there is also an answer.

အေမးရွိလွ်င္ အေျဖရွိသည္။

If you carry the world" No" with you, you will never be poor even in old age.

ဘူးတစ္လံုးေဆာင္ အိုေတာင္မဆင္းရဲ။

If you do not know, ask; if it not clean, wash.

မသိလွ်င္ေမး၊ မစင္လွ်င္ေဆး။

If you don't believe me , ask my wife.

မယံုရင္ ငါ့မယားကိုေမး။

If you want to go fast, go the old road.

အလ်င္လို လမ္းအိုလိုက္။

If you desire is great you obtain little.

အလိုႀကီးက အရနည္းသည္။

Ignorance is more troubles me than poverty.

မရွိတာထက္ မသိထာခက္သည္။

In a basket it is the binding, in a man it is his clothes.

ေတာင္းမွာအကြပ္၊ လူမွာအ၀တ္။

In a forest where there is no heart-wood the castor-oil plant rules.

အႏွစ္မရွိတဲ့ေတာ ၾကက္ဆူပင္ မင္းမူ။

In another's eyes, but in his own eyes he sees no dirt.

အျခားလူမ်ား၏ မ်က္ေခ်းကိုျမင္၍ ကိုယ့္မ်က္ေခ်းကိုယ္မျမင္။

In journeying at improper time, one step; in eating improper food, one mouthful is sufficient to course mishap.

အစားမေတာ္ တစ္လုပ္၊အသြားမေတာ္ တစ္လွမ္း။

It is for bird to fly and die; it is for man t5o scheme and die.

ငွက္သည္ ပ်ံရင္းေသသည္။ လူသည္ ၾကံရင္းေသသည္။

It's like threading a dog's crooked tail through a joint of bamboo.

ေခြးၿမီးေကာက္ က်ည္ေတာက္စြပ္သလို။

Just as the breeze carries the flower's fragrance, so do men carry men's news.

ပန္းသတင္း ေလညွင္းေဆာင္ လူသတင္း လူခ်င္းေဆာင္။

Just when he wants to cry you touch him.

ငိုခ်င္လ်က္ လက္တို႔။

Karma is the mother and karma is the father.

ကံသာလွ်င္ အမိ၊ ကံသာလွ်င္ အဖ။

Karma watches over your property; your intellig- ence watches over your life.

ဥစၥာကံေစာင့္၊ အသက္ဥာဏ္ေစာင့္။

A lazy man lies flat on his back, a lazy woman stretches out her legs.

ေယာက္်ားပ်င္းေတာ့ ေက်ာခင္း၊ မိန္းမပ်င္းေတာ့ ေျခဆင္း။

Let enmity stops short, but love lingers on.

ခ်စ္စကို ရွည္ေစ၊ မုန္းစကို တိုေစ။

Let them know about it but not see it.

သိတာသိေစ မျမင္ေစနဲ႔။

Like father and grandfather alike.

ဘမ်ဳိးဘိုးတုူ။

Loss of good is one day spoiled; loss of a hrsband is a ruined life.

ကုန္႐ႈံးေတာ့ တစ္ရက္၊ လင္႐ႈံးေတာ့ တစ္သက္။

A man does not lose his life if the time at which he is fated to die is not arrived.

၀ါးလံုးေခါင္းထဲ လသာ။

More money always wins the cause.

ေငြမ်ား စကားႏိုင္။

A motherless son is a fish in low water.

အမိမဲ႔သား ေရနည္းငါး။

Near a fisherman one is a fisherman; near a hunter a hunter.

တံငါနားနီး တံငါ၊ မုဆိုးနားနီး မုဆိုး။

No lawyer is infallible, nor a doctor immortal.

မမွားေသာ ေရွ႕ေန၊ မေသေသာ ေဆးသမား။

The oar broke while the boat was going.

ေလွေလွာ္ရင္း တက္က်ိဳး။

Offering a sword-hilt to a thief.

သူခိုး အ႐ုိးကမ္း။

Old bullocks are partial to tender grass.

ႏြားအို ျမက္ႏုႀကိဳက္။

Once you have died you know how to lay out the corpse.

တစ္ခါေသဖူး ပ်ဥ္ဖိုးနားလည္။

One can but fall to earth or rise to the golden umbrella.

ေသေျမႀကီး ရွင္ေရႊထီး။

One capable many and a force of ten thousand was crushed.

တစ္ေယာက္ေကာင္းက တစ္ေသာင္းဗိုလ္ေျခ ညက္ညက္ေၾက။

One's bed is a throne if one thinks to be so.

ကုိယ္ထင္လွ်င္ ခုတင္ေရႊနန္း။

ႀကိဳးခ်င္းထား ႀကိဳးခ်င္းထိ၊ အိုးခ်င္းထား အိုးခ်င္းထိ။

The price of the hook(goad) is greater than the prick of the elephant.

အေပြးျမင္ အပင္သိ၊ အေသြးျမင္ အသြင္သိ။

Setting fire to the grannary because one cannot beat the mice.

ၾကြက္မႏိုင္ က်ီမီးနဲ႔႐ႈိ႕။

She wears the flower when it has a sweet scent, but disards it when it has lost its scent.

ေမႊးလွ်င္ပန္၊ နံလွ်င္ပစ္။

Silence is worth a thousand pieces of silver.

ဆိတ္ဆိတ္ေန ေထာင္တန္။

The snare was set to catch a hare but the cat was caught.

ယုန္ေထာင္ ေၾကာင္မိ။

အေဖထက္ သားတစ္လႀကီး။

ဘုန္းႀကီးစာခ်၊ မိေက်ာင္းမင္း ေရခင္းျပ။

Teasing eventually turns to quarrel.

အက်ီစားသန္လွ်င္ ရန္ျဖစ္သည္။

Teeth that are going to chew for a long time must aviod bones.

ၾကာၾကာ၀ါးမယ့္သြား အ႐ုိးၾကည့္ေရွာင္။

A thing floats when it gets rotten; the news, if not true will not spread.

Those who are unaware walt over it, those who are aware unearth it and eat it.

Too many doctors and the son dies.

ဆရာမ်ား သားေသ။

Too much carp makes the curry in stupid.

Too much talk will include errors.

စကားမ်ားလွ်င္ အမွားပါမည္။

The top of a pinnade now, firewood soon.

မွန္ကင္းတစ္လွည့္ ထင္းတစ္လွည္။

Travelling by raft and yet thirsty.

ေဖာင္ဆီးရင္း ေရငတ္။

Trust a slave you lose an eye; trust your childrin you lose both.

ကြၽန္ယံုေတာ့ တစ္လံုးကန္း၊ သားသမီးယံုေတာ့ စံုလံုးကန္း။

Unitl timber is available, use bamboo as a girder.

သစ္မရခင္ ၀ါးကူ။

A village ox does not feed on village grass.

ရြာနားကျမက္ ရြာႏြားမစား။

Water falling into sand.

သဲထဲ ေရသြန္။

Wax will show the quality of gold.

ေရႊအေၾကာင္း ဖေယာင္းသက္ေသတည္။

When an elephant shrinks it's still a buffalo.

ဆင္ပိန္ေတာ့ ကြၽဲ။

When diamonds are being sold, the tobacco-stalk verchant is in the way.

စိန္ေကာင္းေက်ာက္ေကာင္း ေရာင္းေနသည့္ အခါ၌ ေဆး႐ုိးသည္က ကန့္လန့္ကန့္လန့္။

When I work for my living the rains are sconty, when I sted for my living the dogs bark.

လုပ္စားေတာ့ မိုးေခါင္၊ ခိုးစားေတာ့ ေခြးေဟာင္။

When in agony a mother will even deny being related to her son.

ကိုယ္မခ်ိ အမိေသာ္လည္း သားေတာ္ခဲ။

When the disease is not known there is no remedy.

အနာမသိ ေဆးမရွိ။

When your strength is not sufficient, humble yourself.

အားမတန္ မာန္ေလွ်ာ့။

Where there is a question, there must be an answer.

အေမးရွိလွ်င္ အေျဖရွိရမည္။

While being troubled by snakes, he is harassed by centipedes.
